General Information
The National Key Laboratory of Welding and Surface Treatment Technology was established by Decision No. 850/QD-TTg dated September 7, 2000, of the Prime Minister; and Decision No. 348/QD-BKHCN-MT dated March 21, 2001, of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment. The Laboratory operates under an open mechanism, has cooperative relationships with many universities and research institutes in Vietnam and abroad, and is the focal point for receiving and transferring advanced welding and surface treatment technologies from around the world to Vietnam.
The laboratory, built at the Institute of Mechanical Engineering Research with an investment of nearly 50 billion VND, is equipped with more than 80 modern pieces of equipment from G7 countries to serve research and experimental development.

Functions and tasks
Scientific research and technological development in the field of welding and surface treatment.
Evaluating the results of relevant laboratory analyses and tests.
Researching and applying advanced new technologies from around the world in the field of welding and surface treatment technology.
Conducting training for highly qualified scientific and technological personnel (PhDs, Master's degrees) in welding and surface treatment technology and providing advanced training for engineers and technicians for production facilities.
