Science and technology (S&T) have been identified as a key driving force for the sustainable development of the industry and trade sector, playing an important role in enhancing the sector's competitiveness. With investment attention, the S&T activities of the industry and trade sector have reaped "sweet fruits".

During the period 2011-2020, the Ministry of Industry and Trade focused on synchronously implementing 9 national-level S&T programs/projects, 2 key ministerial-level S&T programs; and accelerating the implementation of the Project on applying S&T in restructuring the industry and trade sector. The application of research results to the production activities of enterprises has contributed to improving productivity and quality, creating many new products with high added value. Many scientific research works have won high awards, are of great significance to socio-economic development, and have established Vietnam's scientific position in the region and internationally.

Many works help establish a position in the region and internationally

For example, in the oil and gas sector, the project cluster “Research, development and perfection of technology for collection, treatment, and transportation of crude oil under the specific conditions of the Vietnam-Russia Joint Venture Vietsovpetro fields and connected fields on the Southern Vietnam continental shelf” was assessed as an exceptionally outstanding project, successfully applying technology for transporting high-paraffin oil via offshore submarine pipelines on the Southern Vietnam continental shelf, with a combination of diverse technological solutions different from traditional world technology; the project “Detailed design research and application of technology for manufacturing, assembling and launching a jack-up rig at a water depth of 90 m suitable for Vietnamese conditions” has made Vietnam one of the few countries in the world possessing detailed design and manufacturing technology for jack-up rigs meeting international standards.

In the field of mining and mineral processing, through the state-level S&T project “Research on manufacturing equipment and construction technology for shaft sinking and vertical shaft hoisting applied to Nui Beo underground coal mine”, for the first time Vietnam has approached and mastered advanced world technology, helping to increase proactiveness and reduce consulting and design costs by about 30% compared to foreign hiring costs; contributing to localizing 2/3 of the value, reducing equipment import costs by 17 – 20%.

In the field of electric power, Dong Anh Electrical Equipment Corporation has fully mastered the technology and successfully manufactured 110 – 500 kV transmission transformers competing with foreign companies; while creating pressure to reduce product selling prices by 15 – 20% compared to before, helping the power sector be proactive in supplying transformers and electrical equipment products, quickly overcoming incidents, and ensuring safe operation of the power grid.

In addition, in the field of mechanical engineering, the project “Research, design, manufacture, assembly, and commissioning of a coal loading, unloading, and conveying system for coal-fired thermal power plants with unit capacity up to about 600 MW” carried out by the National Research Institute of Mechanical Engineering, has successfully applied the coal loading, unloading, and conveying system for Song Hau 1 Thermal Power Plant.

According to the assessment of the Department of Science and Technology, Ministry of Industry and Trade, the results and successes in bringing S&T to serve the development needs of enterprises and the sector in the recent period have been achieved from efforts and continuous innovation in management and organization of S&T activities; closely following practical needs, quickly grasping development trends and application of modern technology in the region and the world, thereby orienting S&T research activities according to a long-term roadmap… has helped the sector's S&T activities bring real effectiveness.

The S&T work of the industry and trade sector is implemented synchronously, from improving institutions, concretizing the orientations and policies of the Party and the State on S&T to deploying research, application, and technology innovation activities in enterprises.
