Localization of thermal power plant equipment

20/04/2021
The Department of Science and Technology (Ministry of Industry and Trade) has just accepted the project “Research on calculation, design, fabrication, installation, and commissioning of a distribution substation with output voltage up to 500 kV and integration of secondary systems for coal-fired thermal power plants with unit capacity up to about 600 MW”.

This is a project under the national-level science and technology project “Research, design, fabrication, and commissioning of some auxiliary equipment systems for coal-fired thermal power plants with unit capacity up to about 600MW”, chaired by the National Research Institute of Mechanical Engineering and Vietnam Machine Installation Corporation.

Meeting for acceptance of the project on fabrication and operation of distribution substations for thermal power plants

Reporting at the project acceptance meeting, Mr. Nguyen Hai Quan – Head of Quality and Technology Management Department, Dong Anh Electrical Equipment Corporation, member of the research team – said: The implementation of the project aims to master the calculation, design, and fabrication of some key equipment with high localization potential belonging to the distribution substation for large-capacity power plants.

In addition, research on other equipment in the substation, assess the localization capability of other equipment in the substation; master the calculation, design, fabrication, integration, installation, and operation of distribution substations with output voltage up to 500kV for coal-fired thermal power plants with unit capacity up to about 600MW.

Currently, some Vietnamese electrical equipment manufacturers have researched, fabricated, and assembled key equipment in distribution substations with large capacity, ultra-high voltage such as power transformers, disconnecting switches. Vietnam is proud to be one of the few countries in the world that has produced transmission transformers for the 500kV ultra-high voltage grid.

However, in reality, there are still many difficulties and limitations in many product items, especially in the production of source transformers, large capacity ultra-high voltage, and ultra-high voltage measuring equipment: Current transformers, voltage transformers 110-220-500kV, ultra-high voltage switching devices such as circuit breakers, switches, surge arresters 500kV…

Most of the above equipment is imported as complete sets from foreign suppliers such as: Alstom, Schneider, Siemens… Along with that, most of the design and calculation tools for ultra-high voltage distribution substations are from foreign corporations, for which we have to purchase licenses. “Although there have been many efforts from the Government to production units to find ways to localize these products, we have not achieved much success” – Mr. Nguyen Hai Quan commented.

Through the research process of implementing the project, the project team succeeded in manufacturing the first 3-phase 500kV – 467MVA source transformer in Vietnam. This is the basis for Dong Anh Electrical Equipment Corporation to continue researching and developing new products, especially with the determination to successfully design and fabricate a 500kV – 900MVA transformer. The project cooperated with foreign partners in detailed design; manufacturing design; design of installation and operation procedures and methods of organizing the implementation of a large project with high technical content…

The implementation of the project brings great benefits to scientific and technological development; promotes the development of the mechanical engineering industry in our country, contributes to the implementation of the equipment localization program in the field of thermal power in particular as well as high-voltage and ultra-high-voltage equipment serving large-capacity power plants and the national power transmission system in general.
