On the afternoon of March 16, 2018, the opening ceremony of the 2018 traditional sports tournament of the Institute was held at the Gym of the National Research Institute of Mechanical Engineering.

Attending the opening ceremony were Comrade Vu Van Khoa, Party Committee member, Deputy Director, Head of the Tournament Organizing Committee; comrades from the Institute's Party Committee; representatives of the Institute's Trade Union Executive Committee; the Secretary of the Youth Union; leaders of units and functional departments; athletes and supporters from units under the Institute.

On the guest side, there were Comrade Dang Quang Hai, Secretary of the Hanoi Industrial Sector Youth Union, and Comrade Nguyen Thi Minh Tam, Secretary of the Mai Dich Ward Youth Union, Cau Giay District, Hanoi.

The Institute's traditional sports tournament is an activity to celebrate the 87th anniversary of the founding of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union (March 26, 1931 – March 26, 2018). It is also a festival for union members to improve their health, exchange, learn, share professional experience, and strengthen solidarity among the Institute's youth chapters, with the determination to successfully complete the tasks of 2018.

The Institute's sports tournament includes the following events: men's football, table tennis, badminton (men's doubles, women's doubles, and mixed doubles), and tennis, taking place from March 16, 2018.
