Promoting digital transformation to enhance the competitiveness of Vietnam's mechanical engineering industry

The application of advanced digital technologies in design, manufacturing, and operational management is becoming an urgent requirement for mechanical engineering and industrial manufacturing enterprises.

An important driving force

The National Research Institute of Mechanical Engineering (Ministry of Industry and Trade) and Tech Data Advanced Solutions (Vietnam) recently organized a Seminar on "Application of Autodesk Solutions in Mechanical Design and Transport Infrastructure Construction" to promote knowledge sharing, business connectivity, and the application of digital technology in Vietnam's mechanical engineering sector.

According to the National Research Institute of Mechanical Engineering, in the context of Vietnam promoting the implementation of the national industrial development strategy, the national digital transformation program and the orientation to develop the mechanical engineering industry into a foundation industry, the application of advanced digital technologies in design, manufacturing and operations management is becoming an urgent requirement for mechanical engineering and industrial manufacturing enterprises.

At the same time, the Fourth Industrial Revolution is creating strong changes in the manufacturing sector with the emergence of technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), smart factories, digital twin (digital twin), product lifecycle management (PLM), cloud computing (cloud computing) and digital collaboration platforms.

These technologies are helping enterprises optimize processes from design, simulation, technical data management to manufacturing and operations, contributing to improving productivity, product quality and competitiveness in global supply chains.

Along with that, the Government is strengthening the enforcement of regulations on rights to intellectual property, protecting software copyrights and promoting the use of lawful software in production and business activities.

Dr. Vu Van Khoa, Vice Director of the National Research Institute of Mechanical Engineering, stated that our country is entering a new development phase requiring the acceleration of industrialization and modernization based on science, technology, innovation, and digital transformation. Notably, Resolution No. 57-NQ/TW of the Politburo has identified the development of science, technology, innovation, and national digital transformation as key drivers to enhance labor productivity, competitiveness, and sustainable national development.

"This is not only a strategic orientation but also an urgent requirement for research institutes, universities, and the business community to quickly access, master, and apply advanced technologies in production and business activities" - Dr. Vu Van Khoa emphasized.

According to Dr. Vu Van Khoa, for the mechanical engineering sector - a foundational industry of the economy - digital transformation is not simply about applying design software or automating certain production stages, but rather a comprehensive transformation process covering research, design, simulation, technical data management, product lifecycle management, smart production organization, and value chain connectivity.

"Technologies such as AI, BIM, Digital Twin, PLM, and cloud computing are creating entirely new methods for product development and modern production organization" - Dr. Vu Van Khoa said.

Realizing development goals

Dr. Vu Van Khoa informed that, as a science and technology organization under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, established in 1962, the National Research Institute of Mechanical Engineering has always defined its mission as the leading research and deployment unit in the field of mechanical engineering and automation in Vietnam.

With over 400 scientific staff, engineers and experts, along with a system of research centers and specialized units, the Institute has participated in research, design, manufacturing, technology transfer and implementation of many key industrial projects of the country.

In recent years, the Institute has gradually mastered many modern technologies in the fields of mechanical design, robotics, automation, artificial intelligence, new energy, and synchronous equipment lines; while also participating in large projects in the automotive, energy, mining, construction materials, thermal power, hydropower, and railway industries. These results affirm the Institute's role not only as a research unit but also as a bridge between research and production, between science and enterprises and the market.

Within the innovation ecosystem of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the National Research Institute of Mechanical Engineering wishes to continue promoting its role as a research and development center, technology consultancy and technical transfer unit; accompanying enterprises in enhancing design capacity, mastering technology, increasing localization rates, and gradually participating more deeply in the global industrial supply chain.

"We believe that the close connection between research institutes, technology enterprises, manufacturing enterprises, universities, and state management agencies will be an important foundation for forming an effective innovation ecosystem, contributing to realizing the development goals of Vietnam's mechanical engineering industry in the new phase" - Dr. Vu Van Khoa said. 

Therefore, the organization of the seminar by the National Research Institute of Mechanical Engineering and Tech Data Advanced Solutions (Vietnam) is not only to introduce Autodesk's technology solutions but also to create a forum for experts, enterprises, and managers to exchange experiences, share successful application models, and discuss opportunities and challenges in the digital transformation process of the mechanical engineering and transportation infrastructure construction sectors.

Dr. Vu Van Khoa also expressed hope that businesses, experts, and partners will continue to strengthen cooperation with the National Research Institute of Mechanical Engineering in research, training, technology transfer, and development of high-quality human resources; jointly build effective cooperation models, create many "Make in Vietnam" technology products, contributing to the development of the mechanical engineering industry into a foundational, modern, and competitive industry in the region.

Through the program, Tech Data Advanced Solutions (Vietnam) wishes to coordinate with the National Research Institute of Mechanical Engineering to build a cooperative relationship, leveraging the strengths of each party to promote the digital transformation process in Vietnam's mechanical engineering and industrial manufacturing sectors.

At the same time, it is believed that the cooperation between Tech Data Advanced Solutions (Vietnam), the National Research Institute of Mechanical Engineering, and the Autodesk technology ecosystem will create practical values for the business community, contributing to enhancing the competitiveness of Vietnam's mechanical engineering industry, promoting innovation, sustainable development, and realizing the goal of industrialization and modernization of the country.

For the mechanical engineering and industrial manufacturing sectors, the use of licensed software solutions not only helps businesses comply with the law but also creates a foundation for effectively deploying digital design solutions, technical data management, smart manufacturing, and innovation.
