National Research Institute of Mechanical Engineering: Leveraging strengths, expanding new research directions

In 2024, the National Research Institute of Mechanical Engineering (NARIME) will continue to conduct further research in the fields of gas-fired thermal power, new energy, renewable energy, and automation.

Ensuring Progress and Quality of Research Projects

In 2023, the socio-economic situation globally and domestically continued to be affected by the aftermath of Covid-19 and geopolitical conflicts. The domestic economic slowdown led to significant difficulties in the scientific research and production-business activities of research units.

Dr. Phan Dang Phong, Director of the National Research Institute of Mechanical Engineering, presents some of the Institute's research achievements to Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien, and Minister of Science and Technology Huynh Thanh Dat

Overcoming these difficulties, the National Research Institute of Mechanical Engineering (Ministry of Industry and Trade) has maintained sustainable operations with science and technology research directions linked to economic activities in the fields of thermal power, bauxite, and cement, while also opening new development directions in gas power, solar power, renewable energy, smart warehouses, chemical industry equipment, etc., thereby building reputation and brand recognition with domestic and international customers.

Currently, the Institute is implementing the ministerial-level project "Research to propose tasks and solutions for developing the equipment manufacturing industry serving the renewable energy sector for coastal and island regions of Vietnam for the period up to 2030, with a vision to 2045" on schedule.

At the same time, it is appraising and finalizing documents after budget appraisal for two ministerial-level projects to be implemented in 2024, including: the project "Research, design, and manufacture of curved elbows with wear-resistant linings made of cast basalt material for pipeline systems transporting highly abrasive powdery materials"; and the project "Research, design, and manufacture of metal 3D printers for producing mechanical parts."

Additionally, it has proposed and received approval from the Task Determination Council of the Ministry of Industry and Trade for the project "Research on establishing specific mechanisms and policies for the domestic design and manufacture of gas power plant equipment."

Dr. Phan Dang Phong, Director of the National Research Institute of Mechanical Engineering, stated that in 2023, the Institute continued to develop science and technology projects at all levels in close alignment with major State economic programs and the Institute's work directions, such as: coal-fired thermal power equipment, solar power, technology and production lines for bauxite-alumina processing, industrial waste treatment; manufacturing new or replacing/restoring equipment in the cement, chemical, and other industries.

"The quality of the thematic reports and projects accepted in 2023 was all assessed as meeting requirements. During implementation, the Institute organized strict supervision, ensuring progress, quality, and registered content in accordance with the procedures and regulations of the State and the Institute" - Dr. Phan Dang Phong emphasized.

Deeper Research in Gas-Fired Thermal Power and New Energy

For over 60 years, NARIME has consistently identified and considered science and technology activities as its core focus, with all economic achievements based on scientific and technological research. The Institute advocates linking science and technology research activities with the country's key socio-economic programs. Notably, the Institute has developed the capacity to act as a general EPC or EPCM contractor for various fields.

Dr. Phan Dang Phong, Director of the National Research Institute of Mechanical Engineering, speaks at the 2023-2024 Conference of Cadres and Employees of the National Research Institute of Mechanical Engineering

For example, NARIME has collaborated with domestic mechanical engineering units to independently design and manufacture hydraulic mechanical equipment for over 29 medium and large hydropower projects in the country, including the Son La (2,400 MW) and Lai Chau (1,200 MW) hydropower plants.

In the current trend, NARIME has swiftly deployed research and development of high-tech products following Industry 4.0, focusing on automated production lines and smart warehouses. This aligns with the development direction of the digital economy, demonstrating agility in developing scientific products and continuously improving the ability to meet market demands.

For instance, the Institute designed, manufactured, and successfully put into operation an automated product sorting system at a logistics enterprise. This automated sorting system can operate continuously for an 8-hour shift per day, achieving a throughput of approximately 7,500 products per hour (equivalent to about 60,000 products per day)...

In 2024, the Institute will continue to conduct further research in the fields of gas-fired thermal power, new energy, renewable energy, and automation to ensure the Institute maintains a competitive advantage in technology, while enhancing its market reputation and focusing resources on projects when necessary.

"In 2024, the Institute will continue to focus its production and business activities on key areas such as: Design and supply of equipment for thermal power plants, solar power plants, systems for mineral exploitation and processing (bauxite), chemicals, jigs and equipment for the automotive and motorcycle manufacturing sector, smart warehouses..." - Dr. Phan Dang Phong stated.

At the same time, it will continue to maintain, consolidate, and develop traditional work areas such as supplying spare parts, warranty and maintenance services for thermal power plants, hydropower plants, cement plants, chemical plants, etc. It will strengthen understanding of artificial intelligence technology and digital transformation, as well as the technological lines of industrial plants, applying this knowledge to advise and implement upgrades and digital transformation for monitoring and control systems of industrial plants.

Gradually approach and expand activities in designing and supplying synchronous equipment lines, as well as equipment and spare parts for new sectors and fields, from agricultural production to high-tech manufacturing in the domestic market, with a view towards export.

The National Research Institute of Mechanical Engineering has developed and submitted to the Ministry of Industry and Trade a proposal for the Institute's Development Strategy for the period 2023-2030 with a vision to 2045, which clearly outlines the direction for science and technology research and production-business activities in fields such as new energy and renewable energy, while continuing to leverage its strengths in hydropower, thermal power, mineral exploitation and processing, cement production, chemicals, etc.
