Vietnam and Laos Sign Agreement to Build Cross-Border Coal Conveyor Belt

On April 8, in Vientiane, Laos, a memorandum of understanding signing ceremony was held for the construction of a cross-border coal conveyor belt between Vietnam and Laos.

Under the witness of Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien, a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation between Thai Binh Xanh Group Joint Stock Company (GP Holdings), the National Research Institute of Mechanical Engineering, and Phonesack Group (PKG) for cooperation in building warehouses and coal conveyor belts for import-export between Laos and Vietnam through the La Lay International Border Gate pair (Quảng Trị) – La Lay (Salavan) was signed.

GP Holdings, the National Research Institute of Mechanical Engineering, and Phonesack Group signed a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation for building warehouses and a coal conveyor belt under the witness of the Ministers of Industry and Trade of Vietnam and Laos.

It is known that Phonesack Group is the project investor. PKG needs to cooperate with a contractor with sufficient capacity and experience to implement the EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) contract for the above project. Initially, PKG will deploy the coal storage system and a 6.3 km conveyor line crossing the Vietnam-Laos border.

In cooperation with PKG on the project, Vietnam established a Contractor Joint Venture consisting of the National Research Institute of Mechanical Engineering and GP Holdings. Among them, the National Research Institute of Mechanical Engineering (NARIME), a unit under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, is the State's leading research and deployment agency for science and technology in the field of Mechanical Engineering - Automation. GP Holdings is a multi-sector corporation operating in the fields of industry, investment, trade, and services. The two sides will cooperate to implement the Project “Construction of warehouses and conveyor system connecting two warehouses to transport coal for import-export between Laos and Vietnam through the La Lay International Border Gate pair (Quảng Trị) – La Lay (Salavan)” invested by PKG.

The entire Vietnam-Laos cross-border conveyor belt is about 160 km long from the XPPL mine (Laos) to My Thuy port (Quảng Trị, Vietnam).

The Joint Venture has extensive experience and sufficient resources to implement many EPC contracts in the industrial field for domestic and international investors. In the field of conveyor transportation, the Joint Venture has implemented many conveyor systems with high capacity, long lengths, operating in harsh conditions such as: the coal transportation system of Song Hau 1 Thermal Power Plant; the system of two conveyor lines (each 5 km long) of Tan Rai and Nhan Co bauxite plants in Vietnam; the conveyor system for transporting coal, gypsum, and clay for Nghi Son Cement Plant (Japanese investor); ...

The entire Vietnam-Laos cross-border conveyor belt is about 160 km long from the XPPL mine (Laos) to My Thuy port (Quảng Trị, Vietnam), of which: 85 km of conveyor line is in Lao territory, 6.3 km of conveyor line crosses the Vietnam-Laos border, and 70 km of conveyor line is in Vietnamese territory.

Phonesack Group is the project investor cooperating with the Contractor Joint Venture on the

Vietnamese side, consisting of the National Research Institute of Mechanical Engineering and GP Holdings.

The signed memorandum between the parties will open up many new opportunities in development cooperation

in coal and energy transportation.

The first phase of the project will implement the coal storage system and the 6.3 km conveyor line crossing the Vietnam-Laos border. The Joint Venture of the National Research Institute of Mechanical Engineering and GP Holdings will coordinate with PKG to conduct surveys and feasibility studies for the remaining sections of the conveyor system, approximately 85 km of conveyor in Laos and 70 km of conveyor in Vietnam.
